I visited Rome twice from Milan to see a (non-local) friend. I came by train and I was really shocked by Stazione Termini... what a terrible neighborhood to arrive in. Talk about bad first impressions!
I agree. In fact, I advised against staying in that area. In general, I don't like areas adjacent to train stations in any city, and especially during this time. There are many areas where you can stay; the most useful things about Termini are the trains and the subways. :)
